Cleaning Up My (Father's) Mess: Narrative Containments of 'Leaky' Masculinities

Author:

  • Kurt Lindemann (San Diego State Univ)

Abstract:

The disabled body is displayed prominently in contemporary films and television shows, yet the ways it is discursively constructed remain relatively unarticulated. This task is even more complex given the literal and figurative "leaks" disabled persons experience due to loss of bodily function. This (auto)ethnographic, performative paper draws on fieldwork with male wheelchair rugby athletes and personal experience with disability in exploring the ways disabled athletes narrate control of their bodies and a preferred masculinity.
