From Girl Scouts to Girls Gone Wild: A Panel on Feminist Humor
It was just a few woman laughing on a Sunday morning. The panel turned performance featured films and live acting on the subject of feminist humor. From Girl Scouts to Girls Gone Wild, stereotypes were addressed in a form of comedy that made a serious statement amidst the laughter.
Presenters Janet Donoghue and Alison Fisher are members of "The Composters," an acting group that combines women's studies, environmental rhetoric and performance.
"We are looking at how feminists will react to some of the political situations and how they've come out of that with a creative resistance," Donoghue said.
The panel begged the pressing question, can humor strengthen advocacy? Fisher and Donoghue proceeded to answer that question through a series of provocative performances.
"This just in, more women are selling their virginity to pay for school given the current economic disaster. Might as well use your national resources," Fisher said while impersonating a female news anchor.
The session was more of a show, addressing everything from female stereotypes to issues relevant to society as whole. From makeup to the financial crisis, the women were not afraid to be funny, while proving a point at the same time.
Their reasoning stems from lingering controversies like Proposition 8 and the economic bailout, which Donoghue says leaves us with a need for an outlet like comedy and performance.
"You see a lot of examples of people not knowing what to do so they use their creativity and their humor in what is now becoming a mass movement," Donoghue said.
