Abstract:The Lincoln Douglas debate at Freeport is analyzed in this paper. It is argued that though the Lincoln Douglas debates have been studied and re-studied throughout rhetorical literature, the debates have not been studied in terms of their style. Hence, this paper begins with historic, democratic, and theoretical underpinnings surrounding the debate, which lead to the stylistic content analysis of the Freeport debate. Newspaper articles which support that style was, in fact, crucial to the public reaction are then presented, followed by rhetorical implications.
