Abstract:Beginning with Lee Edelman's No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive, this paper proposes an alternative to identity-based political action. Edelman's call for queers to turn away from the socio-political sphere in favor of embracing the structural negative has captivated the attention of many interested in processes of social change that avoid the exclusions inherent in identity logic. With no program for action, however, Edelman's call has been labeled impossible. In response, this paper offers sadomasochistic performance artist, Ron Athey, as an example of a queer agent involved in a rather innovative form of performance activism.
