Queering the Politics of Picture Books for Children: LGBTQ Representations in Lambda Finalists 2000-2007

Abstract:

In many instances, adults serve as gatekeepers for what books children are permitted to explore. Unfortunately, this means that most children have limited access to picture books with LGBTQ characters. This study is among the first to utilize principles of queer pedagogy in a qualitative analysis of picture books with LGBTQ characters. The paper closes with recommendations to facilitate more frequent, productive, and expansive discussions of this literature among adults and children.
